The Good Old Days

Aren't these covers a scream? Ah, the good old days of garish excess. These made me smile, so I thought I'd share them. I remember many, MANY years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I was a young teen, I developed a temporary liking for crime comics (my brother was reading them - that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it), ripe with damsels in distress and warped criminality. The phase lasted about a year and then I switched over to romance.

I don't know which phase dismayed my mother more.

  1. Those covers are fun. I love the "Journey Into Mystery" one.

  2. Aren't they a hoot? I remember one or two of the comics as being seriously creepy. Can't remember the titles though. I love this sort of illustration. Did you notice the 'catchy' spelling on the first cover? SuspenStories. Ha.

  3. Fantastic! Some of those crime comics are very creepy and violent. I'm always fascinated to see the way they reflect the film culture of the time (e.g. 'noir' framings and shading). And yes, "SuspenStories" is lovely!

  4. Well, the artwork keeps the creepiness quotient safely on the other side of the veil, if you know what a mean. I am able to look at these with some detachment and appreciation for the artwork. Though I do remember the days when some of these stories made me gulp. Ha! Thanks for posting, Nick.
