Of Art and Bread

Bread, bread wonderful bread. I don't know about you, but bread is my mainstay. I love bread. I could sit and eat a fresh, fragrant, crispy crusted loaf of Italian or French bread and never bother with anything else except perhaps a little swirl of whipped butter. The smell of fresh bread...Is there anything better? If it were a perfume, I would damn my allergies, and wear it.

Over at ART IS THE ANSWER blog there's a post today on the wonderful Boudin Bakery in San Francisco which specializes in sourdough bread of all shapes and sizes, including some fun artistic ones.

LOVE the alligator!(Actually it looks more like a lizard.) LOVE the bread soup bowls!

  1. Vive le pain! I agree with worshipping good bread. I am glad I do not have a great bakery nearby or I'd live on bread (and bagels, nothing like a fresh onion or garlic bagel, in my view, with just a bit of butter).

My father though a good piece of bread and butter, with a fine cup of coffee or tea was the best meal.

However, I'd say, "Vive le pain et le gateau," as I must feed my sweet tooth, too, as well as enjoying the staff of life.

  2. One of my happiest times last year was staying in Montmartre. There was a boulangerie just across the street from our apartment and we were able to get baguettes warm from the oven. Yum!

  3. Kathy: Ah, bagels. Just thinking about a good warm chewy bagel makes me smile.

Your father was right, Kathy. This is one of my favorite meals.

But a slice of chocolate gateau is nice too. ;)

  4. Nicolas: You lucky thing, you. Montmartre. My memories are of living in NYC (in the East 80's) within walking distance of several bakeries and pastry shops. Ah, the good old days.

There is a very good French bakery about a fifteen minute drive away from where I live now. The baker trained in France, believe it or not. Great bread and gateaux. But I try to stay away, too TOO tempting. :)
