Sanctuary: My Workspace

Thought you'd like so see my own little corner of the world. The one fixed point in an ever changing (not always in a good way) world. My version of wonderland with me, not so much as an Alice, but as The Mad Hatter.

This is Ramona Quimby who watches over everything from her perch on a shelf in the kitchen. Sitting next to a cookie jar, of course.

The bulletin board where I put bits and pieces of things that interest me. You never know what might spark an idea.

MORE Christmas Decorations At My House - continued

Thought I'd be able to post these pix yesterday to go with the pix I posted on Saturday, but the day got away from me, so I'm posting them today (a beautiful Monday with the sun shining and the cold winds blowing) instead. No snow so far in New Jersey - THANK goodness!

And here's Rocky looking very dubious about the whole thing.

Christmas Decorations at My House

I thought I'd share a bit of the personal decorating I do at my place around the holidays. (I'll post a few pix today and some more tomorrow.) I don't go all out anymore, no big live tree anymore. I do a kind of quiet decorating, tucked in here and there, which works very nicely for Rocky and me. I love looking in on some of the blogs and seeing all the remarkable decorating bloggers do in their own homes - it is absolutely magical. And the tablescapes, oh my goodness. There's a lot of beautiful design joy being spread about this time of year. Fun to read about, fun to view. When it comes to Christmas decorations, I never get tired of seeing what everyone else is doing. Never get tired of listening to my favorite Christmas carols, especially by the Boston Pops.

  • The first little 'tree' is the one I always place in my living room. I've just noticed that Rocky squished the pillow in the chair - oh well, it gives it that 'lived-in' quality I like.

  • The 'Merry Christmas' sign hanging over the French veterinary poster is made of wood. I like it so much I leave it up all year round in my entryway.

  • The little glitter snowman resides on my kitchen bookshelf this Christmas. I usually just put him wherever a corner needs a little sprucing up.

  • The little tree in the Raggedy Ann bucket is my kitchen tree.

  • The next pix is my mantle. Obviously I do not believe that 'less is more'. To me, more is more. Ha!

  • I always keep the gold framed picture of my late parents on the mantle. It looks nice tucked in among the greenery and my white dove.

  • Close-up of dove and 'bird's nest'.

  • I've had the Nativity creche for many years. It's very modern-looking, kind of Scandinavian. (I think that's where it comes from.) I've never seen another like it.

  • Greenery on a living room bookshelf.

Reading While Eating, Pasta

Experienced readers know the foods they shouldn't eat while reading. Don't have to tell you what they are. Here's a hint: spaghetti with thick sauce = disaster. Have you ever brought a book home from the library only to find the middle pages stained with greasy, bright orange smears of sauce? I know, say no more.

This is not going to be a treatise on foods you should or should not eat while reading (although that might be a good idea for a post later on - I'm always looking for topics), I'm just looking to tie in my pasta recipe which has been requested by a few friends, and my blog.

Here's my take on pasta salad: It's easy to eat, you only have to make it about once every three or so days, and it rarely splatters your book pages. You can fork this salad without looking, keeping your eyes focused on the printed page as you go and something interesting is bound to turn up in your mouth. And,best of all, you don't have to stop to deal with a knife. ,

YVETTE'S READING WHILE EATING PASTA SALAD
I rarely measure with exact accuracy so I'll use handful and about and leave it up to your own cook's instincts to know what I mean. Paula Deen I am not. Also, this is a vegetarian salad (well, except for the bacon bits which I almost always forget) but I suppose you could add chopped chicken or turkey if you were so inclined.

INGREDIENTS:

One box of Rotini Pasta. (Any brand.)

Salt and pepper to taste.

One red pepper, roughly or finely chopped - up to you.

One green pepper, roughly or finely chopped - up to you.
(Obviously you could use a yellow or orange pepper as well. Whatever is on sale is fine. I like a nice mix of colors.)

One bunch of scallions, chopped. Use some of the green too. You could also use a smallish onion instead, if you like.

Half a pound (more or less - I usually like more, but then I'm an olive freak) of pitted kalamata olives, roughly chopped. I wouldn't use jarred olives. Though I suppose those green jarred olives stuffed with pimentos would be all right. Wouldn't taste the same though.

About six or more of those sweet red peppers you find at most olive bars. I don't know what they're called, maybe tomato peppers? Anyway, they look like cherry tomatoes but they're mostly hollow except for a few seeds. I love them. Chop these nicely.

A handful of fresh flat leafed parsley, chopped roughly or fine. I love parsley so I don't mind a rough chop, I eat it either way.

About a cup of cubed cheese - cubed small. I like herb and garlic flavored white cheddar, but it's up to you. (Cabot makes a good one.) I suppose you could use tofu if you were so inclined.

About 1 1/2 oz. (more or less, depending on taste) of ready-to-use julienne cut sun dried tomatoes. You could julienne any size dried tomato of course, but why bother? No need to soak them at all, they'll soften in the salad.

A handful or two of any small bite-size veggie. I used frozen corn kernels yesterday. Just whacked them in the micro then left them to cool, but you could use peas or any chopped vegetable you like.

Bacon bits. I like to make my own, can't stand the store bought kind - they go wimpy. But I usually forget this ingredient and the salad turns out great anyway. So, it's up to you.

Salad dressing. I use about half of a smallish bottle of Ken's Tableside Caesar dressing. But of course, you could make your own or use diet dressing.

Two tablespoons or less of mayonnaise. I suppose if you were on a diet, you could use two tablespoons of plain low fat yogurt and it would be all right. Maybe I'll try that one of these days.

How-to:

Cook the pasta according to package directions until al dente. (Firm to the bite.)

Immediately rinse under cold water to cool down the pasta and stop the cooking. Set aside to cool to room temperature if you have the patience.

Meanwhile, chop the rest of the ingredients. (Or you could do this while the pasta is cooking.)

Mix everything (except the bacon bits) together in a big bowl, tasting and adding as you go along. It's always easier to add than take away.

Toss several times to make sure of a nice mix. Top with more parsley and the bacon bits if you have them.

Refrigerate for two hours or overnight.

Fetch your book, set the table with flowers for a civilized touch, serve a big helping of salad, add a glass of wine or whatever, and there you are.

Book Shelves, Book Shelves!

Where would we booklovers be without them? How many shelves do you have in your house/apartment? Are you a bookshelves-in-every-room type as I am? Are you running out of space for all the books you'd like to own, all the books you surely do intend, at some point, to read? Do you find yourself gazing longingly at bookshelves in the furniture/antique/etc. store, wishing you could find just the spot for that really nice, tall one over there? Do you find yourself re-arranging rooms occasionally just to fit in another bookcase you simply had to lug home from a garage sale? If all your answers are 'yes'. Then welcome to the madness.

I have bookshelves in every room except the bathroom and I've only stopped there because I know humidity is the kiss of death for books. Well, of course then, in the living room, there's always the coffee table to pile high with books.

And I do.

The pile of paperbacks pictured is from the bookshelf in the laundry room which is just the perfect depth for my collection of old paperbacks galore. The shelf with the scottie bookend tucked in between books is from the kitchen. The only shelves missing are the cookbook shelf also in the kitchen and the nice white painted one from my bedroom which is extra deep and has room on each shelf for double rows of books.

Oh, and recently I added another shelf in the laundry room.

When will this madness end?

Front Porch Blooming

Before the heat totally fades them away, here are my flowers as they looked a few weeks ago when temperatures were more to their liking. Today they are looking straggly and beat, exhausted actually. No real point in showing them to you. They are whipped.

It's been one of THOSE summers. Perfect for reading in an air conditioned room, or by the pool, or in a shady glen by a lake, perhaps surrounded by bird chirps. Though come to think of it, a lot of the birds have already beaten a hasty retreat. It's too darn hot. Short walks are the norm. Worms lying on the sidewalk, utterly spent, look ghastly. I avoid stepping on them. Sometimes I'll gingerly pick one up and place it on the grass, but I don't know that they thank me for it.

When I was a kid we didn't have air conditioning. We were heartier stock then, I guess. Or maybe it was that we didn't KNOW about air conditioning, didn't know anyone who had one. So maybe they hadn't come into full use then. Maybe they hadn't even been invented. I grew up, as everyone knows, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. At least according to my daughter.
