Holiday Reading

Two very enjoyable books - recently read by yours truly. You might want to take a quiet break and slip them in between last-minute shopping, decorating, packing and otherwise being overwhelmed by the frenzy of the Christmas holidays.

I bought this last year and held it unread until this past week. I'd never read any of the very British Rumpole books before this one, but I am now convinced that I'll be reading more Rumpole in the new year. This is a perfect place to start. The irascible Rumpole and his wife, She Who Must Be Obeyed, spend the holidays in various ways in these dryly funny short stories.

A hilarious take on one man's neurotic fear of Christmas. I found myself laughing out loud - often. Again, I'd never read any of Garrison Keillor's work before, never even listened to his Lake Woebegon radio programs. But, now I know what I've been missing. The man is a maniac - but in a good way.

These would make nice stocking stuffers too. They're not very big or thick. Just quick fun reads.

Addendum:

Just as we're talking about someone...say, Rumpole - up pops another Rumpole post on another website today.

A new collection of John Mortimer's Best Rumpole stories which, I, for one will be getting my hands on in the New Year. Here it is and a handy link to a review by Betty of Betz Reviews - contributed to Mysterious Reviews.
