Movie News for Gilbert and Sullivan Fans Who Missed This The First Time Around

A short post to announce that after waiting and waiting and then waiting some more, Netflix finally has TOPSY-TURVY (1999) on their available list. Woo-Hoo! Needless to say, I'm a fan of Gilbert and Sullivan and I've been wanting to see this film since I first read about it. The red envelope should arrive tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this was worth waiting for all these years.

Here's one trailer. And yet another.

  1. I saw it in the theatre when it first came out and liked it so much, I had to have my own copy. I think you'll love it.

  2. Ooooh, can't wait! I don't get to the movies much anymore so I miss a lot of films first time around. But I usually try to catch up with them on Netflix. But this one, for whatever reason, took FOREVER to get picked up.

  3. I've seen it as well. Very fun! Jim Broadbent! How can you go wrong?

Netflix has licensing issues. They have some DVDs in circulation for a while and then the ditributors prevent them from renting it out and the movie gets yanked. That must've been what happened with this one. I'm sure you could've rented it in any video store in the past couple of years. It's been out for a while.

  4. I know. I love Jim Broadbent. Yeah, I probably could have rented it from the Blockbuster except that I am so set in my ways. At any rate, I can't wait to see it.

  5. I haven't seen this one - but did you ever see "The Story of Gilbert and Sullivan"? 1953 movie, with Robert Morley as Gilbert and Maurice Evans as Sullivan, with lots of G&S by the D'Oyly Carte company, starring the incomparable Martyn Green. I don't think it's currently available...which is a pity; it was really enjoyable.

  6. Well, since the other one's not available Les, you'll have to watch TOPSY TURVY. Then we can compare notes. I have a feeling I'm going to like it. :)

  7. Lisa: It looks like everyone in the world has seen this except me. And Les. Jeez. Where have we been? :)

  8. It's well worth seeing, Yvette. A good a depiction of behind-the-scenes action as you will see. The major insight it opened up for me is the private torment of Gilbert. It prompts a different view of his comedy. Tell me what you think of his wife's dream, a very interesting touch.

  9. Robin: I'm feeling very left out here! Ha! I'll look for the dream then we can chat.
