Haven't done a reading art post in a while and today seemed a perfect day to do so. Winter is the ideal time to hunker down and read - don't you think? However, we're expecting a heatwave tomorrow of 32 degrees or so (after several interminable freezing days) so Rocky and I shall probably go out and frolic.
Dear Yvette,
ReplyDeleteAs I look at these paintings, the tought occurs to me that the act of reading is a natural for portraiture. One is engaged in an activity yet remains still. My favorite of these is the one by Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier. The light source, that great background and the relaxed posture make it a wonderful portrait.
You've hit the nail on the head, Mark. Perhaps that's why there are so many paintings to choose from. There are even websites devoted to readers in paintings.
ReplyDeleteI like the Meissonier portrait very much as well.
Reading a good book can take you to places far away, and these portraits capture that state so beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI love the Honor C. Appleton painting - do you think that she is reading Alice in Wonderland?
Absolutely she is reading Alice in Wonderland, Rosemary. :) I love this illustration. One of my favorites of a very favorite illustrator whose style I adore.
DeleteI love the Honor Appleton!
ReplyDeleteMe too! :)
