Christmas: The Day After

William Steig

I hope you all had as wonderful a Christmas as we did with family or friends that are like family - and pets too. We had two dogs (Rocky boy and my daughter's Pepper girl) in attendance gobbling any bits and pieces that might, just might, accidentally on purpose fall to the floor. Pepper especially had to be watched with an eagle eye as she's prone to jumping up on the table and grabbing anything in sight. Ha!

The center of attention was my granddaughter - of course. She tore into her presents with eagerness, joy and just a touch of confusion. Confusion because she's still too young to understand what it's all about though she's formulating an opinion that a man in a red suit stopped by in the night while she slept and left all the goodies. She just can't figure out why.

That man in the red suit was very good to all of us and to top it all off, my daughter cooked a fabulous meal.

All in all, another great Christmas Day. My family is very fortunate to be able to be together at holiday time and don't think we don't know it and thank God for it. I can only wish that my mother and father had lived to share a few more Christmases with us.

P.S. We did get chance to watch the Disney Silly Symphonies cartoons I posted about a few days ago. My granddaughter LOVED them! Especially T'was the Night Before Christmas. It did my heart good.

P.S.P.S. When I got home last night I watched my very own copy of CONTRABAND with Conrad Veidt which was part of my Christmas loot.

  1. So glad you had a wonderful holiday! And it's a very good impression of an elf, the day after Christmas, your Rocky is doing!

  2. That's terrific that you and your family had such a great time -- and the dogs, too! (Rocky is adorable in his elf hat. It sounds like he and Pepper were doing their jobs begging and looking for morsels.)

And your granddaughter must have been so happy at all of it, including the cartoons. Glad to see her grandmother is teaching her about "good" cartoons.

Contraband: I read about it here and put it on hold at the library and it's ready.

I confess I've watched so many episodes with the corpulent agoraphobic detective and his charming sidekick that I actually had to take a break. There's only so much yelling of "Confound it! He's a whitling." or "Pfui"
that I can take within a few days -- and the yellow pajamas!

There's one episode where the Wolfeman hires someone to imitate him and sits in his chair eating ginger snaps -- sacrilege!

But tonight I'll be ready for more.

You must get these TV episodes. Anyway, glad to read that the holiday was a huge success, especially for the newest family member. Christmas is so magical when one is a child.

  3. Yvette - glad you had a good time at Christmas! Having a child in the centre of the celebrations makes it all the more magical! We saw extended family earlier in the month so it was just the four of us at home - great fun & time to let our hair down.
Love the picture of Rocky - I miss our hound; we couldn't get him to keep a hat on but he would happily wander about with a pair of false antlers!

Boxing Day is drawing to a close here, so the UK will briefly return to normal before New Year celebrations break out; on which note - all the best to you & your family gig 2013!

  4. Being with grandchildren must be the best Christmas gift ever for grandparents and I am glad you had a wonderful time with your granddaughter, Yvette.

  5. Thanks, Peggy Ann. Hope you had a great one too. Yeah, Rocky loves to model the latest elvish fashions. NOT!! Ha!

  6. You are on a Nero Wolfe bender, Kathy!! Ha! Netflix has them, I think, but only a few episodes at a time. I should check my library...

Yes, thanks, my granddaughter made everything new and special. She is a total delight - exhausting, but delightful. At the end of the evening I was sitting on the floor with her working on a Curious George puzzle.

Needless to say, I had to take some Advil once I managed to get up. HA!

    But it was worth it.

  7. Thanks, Sue! I agree that a child makes Christmas that much more joyous. She is just so adorable and so full of energy. She wears us all out! :)

I'm sure there will be pictures of her tearing into her presents online at my daughter's blog at some point. She didn't really understand why she was getting so many boxes filled with goodies but she enjoyed the heck out of them anyway.

Happy New Year to you and your family, Sue. To infinity and beyond!! Yeah, she got a Buzz Lightyear action figure. :)

  8. Thanks, Prashant. Yes, it's THE BEST Christmas present, you said it. We had a wonderful time. Even Rocky behaved himself - well, more or less. We've taught Julianna that she must pet him gently since he's so small and so grouchy. Her own dog is a boisterous terrier mix and can stand rough-housing.
NOT Rocky. He has to be kept an eye on.

Happy New Year to you and your family, Prashant - it's going to be a good one.
I'm getting a grandson sometime in May.

  9. I'm glad you had such a wonderful Christmas celebration, Yvette, as did I. Your mention of Pepper reminded me of my brother's dauchshund who managed one time to jump on the table and eat a whole stick of butter!

  11. Mark when it comes to sense, dogs were short changed when it comes to food. They will eat ANYTHING. Pepper really has to be watched continuously if there is any sort of food within striking distance. I once caught Rocky on top of the kitchen table with his head in my coffee cup. How he got up there is a tribute to his ingenuity since he is, as you know, a chihuahua. My Rocky looks like a football - this year I'm putting him on a diet. Ha!

Glad to hear you had a great Christmas too.

  13. Sounds so wonderful, especially with your grand-daughter. Glad to read she's doing puzzles already.

Yes, I confess, I even became tired of the 35th Street brownstone resident, so have to take a break. But you must see these episodes. Hilarious.

Congratulations on the grandson news, now more little ones to teach about art, books, puzzles, dogs, games, cartoons, movies, the works.

And, yes, my neighbor's Dachshund got into my pumpkin pecan pie and we gave it to her; as much as I love her, I'm not eating pie a dog licked!

  14. A Dachshund in the Pumpkin Pecan Pie. I love it! Ha! A very exciting Christmas.

I will definitely be lining up the Wolfe episodes in the new year, Kathy.

In the meantime, I hope you and your family will have a very Happy New Year!
