Well, my basement is a wreck. Had no hot water this morning so went to check downstairs and found the whole place flooded. (I know, I know, you may ask why didn't I check down there sooner? Well, here's the answer: I didn't want to. Especially since there wasn't much anyone could do about it yesterday. My landlord's basement flooded as well.)
Anyway, it's obvious the water was swirling around, kind of like the ocean. Many things that were on shelves are on the floor. Glass vases (some broken), boxes, baskets, that sort of thing. Nothing valuable or irreplaceable, most of it stuff I didn't really need. But it will all have to be dealt with. What a mess! GAK!!
The funny thing is: I didn't hear any of this. Must have happened while I slept.
You have an incredible knack for finding just the right picture. I hope this guy isn't in your basement. Good luck cleaning up.
ReplyDeleteHi, Yvette - I'm sorry you suffered damage, but I'm glad nothing irreplaceable was lost. I'm not sure where in New Jersey you are, but my brother in Virginia got a double whammy from both the earthquake and the hurricane, with some damage from each.

Thanks, Mark. It's funny you should say that about your brother's double-whammy. I was just talking to my daughter and she thinks the broken stuff down in the basement was the result of the earthquake, NOT the flooding water.

ReplyDeleteI was in the same situation the day of the storm: do I look in the basement or not? I did look and there was no water. Whew! I'm sorry you weren't so lucky.
ReplyDeleteThe earthquake was strange. I definitely felt it but nothing fell off the walls or jiggled around on shelves. But pictures fell down at my niece's house only a few blocks from us.

ReplyDeleteBelieve me, it could have been much MUCH worse. Some of the towns in the area are still without power and homes are flooded on the main floors. It's a mess.
I've been reading the news online and wow, I can only imagine what this would have been like if it had been even a Category 1 or 2 storm.

Even if I had looked down there early on, what could I have done about it? Not much. :)
So sorry to hear about the basement flooding, Yvette (though I too love the picture!). My house escaped any water damage...some smaller tree branches are down...but we're pretty much intact here. However, our water is out - the treatment plant flooded and it's likely to be several days or even two weeks before we can drink the water again. (I know, I know, there's always beer, but it's hard to brush your teeth with beer. Or so I've been told.)

ReplyDeleteMe blithely thinking that we in the Big Apple were fine, and then I found out two friends' house in the Bronx was filled with smoke from faulty wires during the hurricane. Firefighters who were fighting a fire across the street and came over and helped them.
This on top of several enormous trees falling or being stripped of huge branches.
Very glad you two are okay.
