Happy Birthday, A.A. Milne!

Drawing by E.H. Shepard

Today is the birth date of A.A. Milne (1882 - 1956) who created (both literally and figuratively since the boy in the story is based on Milne's son Robin) the beloved characters we all know so well.

"People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day."
A.A. Milne - 'Winnie the Pooh'

  1. Winnie the Pooh was a big part of my childhood, at least at bedtime. I've been disappointed that Disney saw the need to recreate the characters; for me, the original drawings were more than half the charm.

  2. The Disney adaptation doesn't work for me either, Mark. There's NOTHING like the original illustrations by E.H. Shepard. You can't improve on perfection.

  3. There is another reason to remember (and enjoy) Milne. In 1922, four years before Pooh and his friends, Milne wrote a mystery called "The Red House Mystery." It's light, entertaining, features a "locked room" type murder at an English country house, and it's still in print 91 years later, both as an inexpensive paperback and as a free Kindle book. If you haven't read it, it's worth looking up!

  4. Free Kindle book? Where can I link up with that, Les. Amazon?

I would love to read this. Thanks for the reminder!

And I read "The Red House Mystery" last year and loved it.

  7. I loved Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Roo, and all of the animals.

Just wonderful: the book, that is.

I don't even really know about the movie.
