Saturday Salon: A Favorite Painting - or Two or Three.
Not an artist I'm all that familiar with, except that these paintings knock me out. Janet Fish (1938 - ) is a modern day 'realist' painter and print maker, whose work, most especially her assorted paintings in which glass objects are featured prominently, made me sit up and take notice when I saw them online a while back.
The spectacular use of color though, is the first thing that catches the eye. All three of these paintings make me feel as I'm sitting in the Mediterranean sun. I can't paint glass at all and light reflected through glass is beyond me. I admire anyone who does such a fine and special job of it. These remarkable paintings have a quirk to them, a sparkle of light, an exuberance - like nothing else I've seen. Just lovely, lovely work.

Hello Yvette:
ReplyDeleteJanet Fish is an artist of whom we have not heard so we are most interested to have been introduced to her by you.
The colours in the paintings you show remind us stongly of the 1950s, something which is reinforced by the coloured glass, also redolent of the period.
And, what a splendid book 'The Impressionists' looks to be. Like you, these artists hold a fascination for us and so anything published about them has an appeal. But,we do so agree, better by far when one can read about them in detail without being bamboozled by technical terminology.
I Like her work! Thanks for finding her and introducing her work to me!
ReplyDeleteJane and Lance: Yes, I agree. While reading your comment I realized that the glassware in the paintings reminds me of 'carnival glass' which was the inexpensive glass given away way back when. Well, truth be told, I love colored glass anyway. Probably why these paintings spoke immediately to me.
ReplyDeleteI think we agree that art talk should be clearer and more user-friendly rather than the opposite. :)
Life in the Big Gray Victorian On the Corner: Thanks for dropping by and leaving a first-time comment.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you liked the work of the artist, Janet Fish. I admit I'm mad about it. :)
Thank you for the photographs and specially for the links. I found the paintings really beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThat third painting knocked my socks off. The use of light is gorgeous and I even love the apples. Thank you so much for sharing
ReplyDeletenever heard of this artist before. i like the colors. especially on the third one. the blueish glasses are magical!
ReplyDeleteI love Janet Fish's work--thank you for using your blog to introduce her to people who are unfamiliar with her wonderful ability to capture the reflection and refraction of color and light. Looking at her work, I can't help but think of an al fresco brunch on a bluff overlooking the ocean.
ReplyDeleteMystica: You're welcome. So glad you liked Janet Fish's work. It is very special.
ReplyDeleteRyan: Yes, isn't it wonderful. She also works in a heavier medium/technique which I like too, but these lighter paintings are my favorites.
ReplyDeleteYou know me when I find an artist I like, Ryan. I immediately want to spread the word. :)
Demie: I'd never heard of her either, it was a happy accident that I found these paintings online. My favorite part of the interent: finding new and wonderful artists to talk about. :)
ReplyDeleteDeb: She is now, officially, one of my very favorite artists working today. I just love her work. I can hardly believe she's been around for so many years and I'm only just now finding out about her.
ReplyDeleteBut, better late than never. :)
These particular paintings are very evocative of 'place' even if they don't actually show where these 'still lifes' are situnated. These are the sorts of paintings that immediately get your mind to racing. I love them.
It is a pleasure to share this sort of work. :)
Like you, I stand in awe of anyone who can paint glass in this way. (I did try watercolour some years ago, but I soon learnt that if I wanted to paint the world, I´d better use words).
ReplyDeleteAnother post which brought a smile to my face :)
Dorte: So nice to hear from you. Yes, isn't her glasswork amazing? I can't do it, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteWords are a way of painting, anyway. :)
