The King's Speech - Costume and Set Notes

A film I am waiting patiently to see, multiple Golden Globe Winner, THE KING'S SPEECH starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, two of my favorite actors. In the meantime I read interesting tidbits here and there about the filming and the stars and whatever. Here's an intriguing slide show from Vanity Fair, which gives a nice overview of production designer Eve Stewart's thinking on the sets and costumes.

I've always been a big fan of King George VI. Certainly England was best served by having him on the throne during the war years, rather than the man who became Duke of Windsor.

  1. You will love the film, Yvette - it was a sheer delight to go and see it. The period details have been very carefully portrayed and although, yes, some of the drama takes place in one room,(Logue's consulting room) 145 Piccadilly, the Duke and Duchess's London home, is also beautifully created as, too, the interiors of Buckingham Palace.

It is indeed a very 'beautiful' film and richly deserves the honours already bestowed upon it. Let's hope the 'Academy' think likewise!

  3. Sue: I just know I'll love it! How could I not?

Yes, one of the reasons George VI was so shy was that speech impediment. Also he had not been raised to be King, he had not expected it. He didn't want it. But he did an amazing job regardless.

I have a beautiful pencil drawing that my father did of him many MANY years ago. I've been searching for it, but so haven't found it.
    I'm going to keep looking.

  4. Yvonne: Well, the poor little Duke looked good in clothes, but he was not the brightest bulb in the pack. He and Wallis deserved each other.

I love films about England, too! :)

  7. It was wonderful. Full of feeling, but restrained at the same time. So British, so Windsor. And Colin Firth looked pretty good in a suit, too.
