Quote/Unquote

"There is no use trying," said Alice; "one can't believe impossible things."

"I dare say you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

Lewis Carroll

  1. Nearly nine months late I am, but I think you and the Queen (and Lewie!) have helped me to finally come up with my this year's (and from now on) New Year's resolution: I will believe impossibble things, as many as six before breakfast. And yes, I shall practice this for half an hour a day!

    Thank-you!

  2. Me too, Sparkle! It's the only thing to do to maintain a healthy mental balance. :)

  3. Yvette,

Six impossible things? Easy, just browse the Internet for 10-15 minutes, and you will find a week's worth of impossible things to believe.

    Coincidence Dept.

A F-T-F Classics group I belong to is discussing _Alice in Wonderland_ in about two weeks. I had read it many years ago, so my memory of it has faded a bit. However, I did vaguely remember the first chapter, but where did the second and third chapters come from? All gone. It just may be like reading it for the first time.

  4. So true, Fred. :)

It just gets easier and easier to believe the impossible. It hardly takes any effort at all anymore.

I've forgotten so many books over the years that I might as well not have read them at all. Except that I know at some point they did me some good. :)

  5. From my favourite Christmas mystery The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding,

"There are many things that are unbelievable,'' said Poirot. "Especially before breakfast, is it not? That is what one of your classics says. Six impossible things before breakfast."

    Love Alice in Wonderland!
