Another Fun Meme: Fifteen Movie Questions...

...waiting to be answered by yours truly. I stumbled over this intriguing meme today and want to thank the fabulous movie blog, I LUV CINEMA for bringing it to my attention. When you check them out you'll see that they, in turn, picked up the meme from other sources. The blogging world is like an onion, the more you peel, the more you find.

Okay, so here goes:

1. MOVIE YOU LOVE WITH A PASSION.

Well, no surprise here. If you read my blog. DIVA.

2. MOVIE YOU VOW TO NEVER WATCH.

Simply because it won a Best Picture Oscar in the year that BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN should have won.

3. MOVIE THAT LITERALLY LEFT YOU SPEECHLESS.

THE BLACK STALLION. The absolutely incredible beauty of this film (cinematography by Caleb Deschanel) always leaves me speechless.

 4. MOVIE YOU ALWAYS RECOMMEND.

Jean Cocteau's LA BELLE ET LA BETE - Beauty and the Beast.

 5. ACTOR/ACTRESS YOU ALWAYS WATCH - NO MATTER HOW CRAPPY THE MOVIE.
There's just something about Michael Rennie.

 6. ACTOR/ACTRESS YOU DON'T GET THE APPEAL FOR.

Shia Labeouf . Don't get it.

 7) ACTOR/ACTRESS, LIVING OR DEAD, YOU'D LOVE TO MEET.

Basil Rathbone. Vincent Price. David Niven. Hmmmm. I see a theme going on here...

 8) SEXIEST ACTOR/ACTRESS YOU'VE SEEN.

So many. So many. Hard to choose just one. Yul Brynner in THE KING AND I is a definite stand out.

 9) DREAM CAST.

Heath Ledger. Jake Gyllenhaal. Michelle Williams. Anne Hathaway. The cast of  BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.

10) FAVORITE ACTOR PAIRING.
Myrna Loy and William Powell. Perfection together.

11) FAVORITE MOVIE SETTING.

The English countryside.

12) FAVORITE DECADE FOR MOVIES.

Hard to choose. But the 1940's is probably my favorite movie decade.

 13) CHICK FLICK OR ACTION MOVIE.
Action. THE BOURNE TRILOGY

 14) HERO, VILLAIN OR ANTI-HERO?
Anti-hero. Matt Damon in THE BOURNE TRILOGY.

15) BLACK & WHITE OR COLOR.

Can't choose. I love 'em both for different reasons. But I think in color, so I choose color even if some of my favorite movies were in black and white and I wouldn't have 'em any other way.

  1. Great list!

My brain isn't on full tilt right now, due to the evil tree/grass pollen siege, but I'll respond to this a bit.

I agree on William Powell and Myrna Loy, a chemistry that can't be topped. Another thought based on reality: Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in Dark Passage, To Have and Have Not (the whistle scene); Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant in Notorious (a favorite movie)

To meet: I'd say Paul Muni, John Garfield, Gregory Peck. Of women, there are many including Judy Holliday and Mae West (really; she had chutzpah!). Jean Arthur is a family favorite.

Of sexiest: Today probably Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp (what mystery), Jimmy Smits, Benjamin Bratt, Old days: Gregory Peck, Gary Cooper

Great actors: So many, but one I have to add to above is Morgan Freeman (he is stupendous in Invictus and The Shawshank Redemption, etc.). By the way, Matt Damon is good in Invictus, too.

Diva: I see it's on hold for me at the library, and I'll get it. I have a feeling this is a project which I'll have to view twice to get everything in the plot.

  2. Crash is a wonderful movie, you should see it someday.

Powell & Loy are the perfect on screen pairing.

I'm going to have to borrow this one soon.

  3. Yvette this is an awesome list! I particularly like #s 2, 4, 5, 10, 11. I do not mind Crash but it did not deserve to win Best Picture of that year; Brokeback all the way.

I have never see Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast but I hear wonderful things about it.

Michael Renie was a very good actor.

Myrna Loy is one of my favorite actresses and she and William Powell made for a good time.

Ah ... the English countryside - it is beautiful indeed. Hope to see some of it in a couple of weeks when I head over to the UK.

I have never heard of Diva but I will look into it. And finally regarding #6, I am somewhat indifferent to Mr. LaBeouf (actually bumped into him on the street in Manhattan a couple of years back) but you are not the first person I have heard who has this feeling about him. One film critic has called him a "charisma vaccuum." Those are some fightin' words!

Lastly you have a very interesting blog. I am going to enjoy exploring it.

  4. Kathy: I'm having the same allergy problems. Yesterday and today - horrible!! Very bad allergy season this year.

Best pairings: I've always liked Cary Grant with Katherine Hepburn. That was my second instant choice off the top of my head. I'm not a big Bacall fan. Though I do love DARK PASSAGE. It's probably my favorite of the Bogart/Bacall flicks.

Johnny Depp in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN is adorably sexy.

  5. Yeah, Ryan, it's a very fun meme. But, of course, it'a always hard to pick one of anything. :)

  6. I Luv Cinema: Well, your weekend is set: Watch DIVA and LA BELLE ET LA BETE. Ha! Two exquisite movies that should not be missed, in my opinion. Be sure and watch the subtitled versions and not any dubbed in mish-mash. ;)

Coincidentally: I wrote about DIVA on the blog a few days ago.

Michael Rennie was my late mother's favorite actor and subsequently, he became one of mine. There was no one then nor is there now anyone quite like him. He was unique.

Thanks for dropping by and taking a look at my efforts. Much appreciated. :)

  7. My mother adored Charles Boyer. My Dad liked Ingrid Bergman and Anna Magnani.
I also like Ingrid Bergman as an actress and Meryl Streep, Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie Gyllenhall, Angela Bassett, Selma Hayak
I definitely loved the Cary Grant/Ingrid Bergman pairing in Notorious.
Have to try to squeeze some memory cells out of this pollen/addled brain, after finishing the final Leon and going to a fall-back book or crawling out to buy more of Archie and the gang. Or to get Diva and The Lock Artist -- I won't get outside for days then!

  8. You're much better off staying indoors in allergy season, Kathy. Especially when it's as bad as it is.

I was never a big Bergman fan either, except in NOTORIOUS and, I think, HUMORESQUE.

I am definitely a Meryl Streep fan, she and Emma Thompson are TOPS!

    BUY MORE ARCHIE AND WOLFE!

  9. Bergman is so good in Casablance, too, and in some early Italian films also.

My movie pile rose last night after I read this and another blog, and the NYT, added three dvd's.

I see your encouragement to buy more Archie & the Gang books. I am borrowing a 2in1 book from a friend who says I can keep them (although I'll loan them out), and I am going to buy Over My Dead Body, looks too good to give back to the library.

Between this and Camilleri, and more global mysteries, my budget (oh, did I have one?) will be shot. My library doesn't have a lot of the Camilleri either.

I'm reading the first Ariana Franklin book, have to get into the epoch's mood and language. It's not a quick zippy ride.

  10. A lot of libraries are thinning out their vintage collections. It's a shame, especially now with blogs reviving interest in the early work of many many authors.

But thankfully, many vintage books are available at certain booksellers for not too much money.

Still, when you're on a fixed budget, like me, it's not always easy to get your hands on all the books you want. I long for the old days when book buying, for me at least, was second nature. :)

  11. Just curious...did you see the link to Iba's blog and meme on my blog, or elsewhere?

100% with you on LA BELLE ET LA BETE. Do you want to join the Tuesday's Overlooked Films meme? If not on a regular basis, then when you get around to it? I can always link to your DIVA post on Tuesday...

  12. Todd: I can't remember where I saw the link to I Luv Cinema's quiz. It may have been your blog, but honestly I just don't know. I apologize if this is what happened. I try to keep track of things, but sometimes I just forget to make note.

I'd like to join your meme, thanks for asking. Can't promise to do it every week. But I'll do my best. I'll check to see what films you've already included so I don't overlap. :)

  13. A friend of mine goes upstate to Rhinebeck and either goes to a thrift shop or used book shop. He got lots of Donna Leon books for a quarter each.

Are there any stores like that around your environs?

Yes, indeed. The library is culling its vintage books or offering electronic resources -- ugh. And it's culling out Australian-authored books, and so much more. It is aggravating.

There's one copy noncirculating at the main library branch. Impossible for most humans.

  14. Kathy: You bring back such good memories. When my daughter was small and I was still married, we used to go to all sorts of wonderful places, including upstate to the Rhinebeck Arts and Crafts and Antiques show. Good times.

Lots of old books to be had as well.

Well, with how easy it is to buy old used copies of books online, I'm not surprised the libraries are culling them. But it's still sad.

I so dislike reading books electronically. I really have no stomach for it.
