The Unexpected Guest. A gorgeously sumptuous painting by another little known English woman painter, Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (1872 - 1945). A link to a short bio and some further work is here.What I especially like in this painting is that sumptuousness, the jewel-toned colors and the density of the whole scene which has the look and richness of tapestry. Note the cupid - a very handsome winged young man, lurking in the corner: the unexpected guest.
A topic apropos of the fairy tale aspects of Royal Wedding Weekend, I thought.
I agree that it is a very rich painting. I love the sheen and hues of the dress.
ReplyDeleteYes, gorgeous. I wonder if it's meant to imply that the man she's marrying isn't her true love. :) That 'cupid' is just too handsome.
