Sunday Salon: Short and sweet.

Not doing much of a Sunday Salon since I've already done my Summing Up this past week (of 2010), so not much left to sum up. Rocky and I are looking forward to the new year, day to day, seeing what it brings. So far, so good.

Between Christmas and New Year's Eve, I read a total of one book: A BUTTERFLY IN FLAME by Nicholas Kilmer, which was part of my Christmas book loot from Santa. (Review tomorrow.) I'm also finishing up a good non-fiction read: THE POISONER'S HANDBOOK by Deborah Blum. A thought provoking look at poisons and how almost impossible it was, in the first half of the 20th century, to uncover murder by poison. Very interesting stuff.

(The Nicholas Kilmer book brought my reading year to an end at 121 books. Seems like a lot, I suppose, but I thought I'd done better. I do wish I had better retention of what I read...I used to. I plead old age and let it go at that. Some books are easy enough to remember, some are not.)

Spent a few days this week fighting with a sinus infection, not a lot of fun, but I seem to be doing better and better each day, so can't complain.

That's about it for this past week.

Now if only the Jets and Giants win their respective games, all will be sweet.
Note: Artwork at bottom of post by the one and only Racey Helps, one of my favorite illustrators in the whole wide world. (As if you didn't know.)

  2. It is. I skimmed some of the more scientific minutia but otherwise, it's really an eye-opening book. Lots of interesting cases to read about. It's about the very early efforts at detecting poisons in dead bodies by the NY State Coroner AND the establishment of the first NY Coroner's office staffed with medicos instead of politicos. Good stuff.
