There's a book that's stayed with me for decades. Thoroughly original and truly frightening. I'd cheat and add a ghost story collection if I were to make a Best Books for Halloween list. One of the best samplers is <i>The Anthology of Ghost Stories</i> edited/selected by Richard Dalby. And I know you're not a vampire fan, but if anyone wants a really creepy story about Romanian vampires they should track down AN ANCIENT EVIL by Paul Doherty. It gave me nightmares.
