Best fencer in Hollywood was rumored to be Basil Rathbone. You can see his fencing prowess in ROBIN HOOD and also in THE MARK OF ZORRO. He had to pretend to let the good guy get the better of him. :)Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-27593571471139231212016-08-26T10:40:05.585-04:002016-08-26T10:40:05.585-04:00Charlton Heston as Richelieu - perfect casting. I've wanted to learn to fence since my idol, Mrs. Emma Peel, of The Avengers, fenced. It looks like a real workout - at least the way Gene Kelly does it in the movie! Gene Kelly had wonderful panache, and I've always loved the scene from the still above, when he slid down the table slashing away at foes on either side. If anyone had handed me a sword as I left the theater, I'd've happily thrust and parried my way home with a devil-may-care smile on my face. I have a huge affection for the more ironic Oliver Reed / Michael York version from the 1970s with Faye Dunaway as a fantastic villain. These are the two best versions for me.
