Soon as I finish THE MYSTERIOUS COMMISSION I'm reading LAMENT FOR A MAKER. Will report. ;)Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-7483279461964071482010-12-14T20:16:15.724-05:002010-12-14T20:16:15.724-05:00Bev and Yvette - I've recommended it before, b...Bev and Yvette - I've recommended it before, but let me say it again: I still think Innes's absolute best is LAMENT FOR A MAKER, an impossible crime set in a remote, crumbling castle in the Scottish highlands. It's an Appleby, but it's such a tour-de-force of atmospherics and brilliant writing that the detective work is almost secondary. Still, I enjoyed it. I'm really having fun reading the Innes books. Honeybath is a recurring character? Good to know. :)

If you like 'academic' mysteries, have you read Joanne Dobson's series featuring a college professor as the solver of mysteries? If not, I think you might like them.Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-6201259250759686172010-12-13T16:27:34.455-05:002010-12-13T16:27:34.455-05:00How wonderful to see your Innes review! So far, my favorite Innes is Seven Suspects (aka Death at the President's Lodgings) which takes place at St. Anthony's College. I'm a sucker for academic mysteries.

Honeybath is a great recurring character. I've not read the one you mention, but he shows up in a few others as well.Bev Hankinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01127476456755776574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-29770097477171281692010-12-13T14:41:17.418-05:002010-12-13T14:41:17.418-05:00Les: APPLEBY'S END is definitely on my list. The 'hero' is an artist named Charles Honeybath - is that a great name or what??Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-77169294931667870592010-12-13T14:34:44.579-05:002010-12-13T14:34:44.579-05:00Innes is one of my favorite authors. If you like the Ravens, try "Appleby's End," the book in which Appleby meets Judith, not to mention the extremely odd members of her family.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
