Her coquettish demeanor delights me.

The Norton Simon actually has an impressive collection of Rotari's but, sadly, only this picture is regularly on display. In men, it had to do with status and profession, so it's possible the same thing applied to women - but in their case, having only to do with social class.

This was an era when people wore sleeping caps!Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-73147311843174294142011-11-14T11:01:14.661-05:002011-11-14T11:01:14.661-05:00John: I noticed that myself. He's the earliest master criminal character in Victorian literature. Though I'm really a dog man myself, I really love the illustration and had to accept his feline companion as part of the package. The character is one of my favorite bad guys in all of crime fiction.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-64734659777042377662011-11-13T22:56:08.751-05:002011-11-13T22:56:08.751-05:00I like the second down the best, the girl with the...I like the second down the best, the girl with the blue velvet cap. There is that left eyebrow (the model's, that is, so the one facing us on the right) the slopes downward to the bridge of the nose that is the most prominent giveaway.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-44958728725012219932011-11-13T16:32:07.358-05:002011-11-13T16:32:07.358-05:00Possibly. :)Possibly. :)Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-37652705054175301602011-11-13T14:57:40.830-05:002011-11-13T14:57:40.830-05:00He did like fans, didn't he. It is so difficult to know with artists. They seem to pour themselves into their paintings and leave little behind for reality.

Although some manage both quite nicely.Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-57239324213220909602011-11-12T18:20:32.382-05:002011-11-12T18:20:32.382-05:00Very few artist's can paint that well today. I'd like to think that Antonio was as charming as his sitters.Mark D.
