(The Edward Petherbridge series from the 80s is excellent too). The stagey quality you speak of was extremely common on Brit TV up until the 80s, a mix of videotaped interiors and (usually) 16mm filmed exteriors. The look bothers some people but, like you, I like it...it is intentionally like a play, and tends to focus the viewer more on all those amazing British character actors and witty scripts.
