It belongs on everyone's book shelves. I love the damned thing!

Plus, I would really be interested in your opinion. Of course if you hated it, I'd have to cut off further ties with you. HA! Nah. I'd just shake my head in wonder.

I had a nice email correspondence going with Tim Cockey years ago, but then he sort of disappeared. I'm not sure what he's doing now.

But I did like the early books in the Hitch Sewell series very much.
I liked the weisenheimmer humor.

I've only read a couple of the Neal Carey books, but yeah, I agree they deserve more mention. A very odd series, but a very good one. I'm not a fan of the later Winslow work - much too noir for me. But people I know rave.

As for Paul Watkins, I didn't notice any similarity between his work and Hemingway's. Of course I don't read Hemingway - too mano a mano for me. Plus I never got over the dumbness of THE SUN ALSO RISES. At least the beginning when I said to myself, but this is so easily fixed. Then stopped reading.

I do appreciate though that Hemingway was the first to use spare language and for that I thank him - when I'm in a spare language frame of mind.

As always, John, thanks for your thoughtful comments. :)Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-77110721268467552312011-08-10T12:29:47.666-04:002011-08-10T12:29:47.666-04:00Quite a variety of the esoteric here. You are push...Quite a variety of the esoteric here. You are pushing THE GRASSHOPPER KING on us. Stop it, I may have to buy a copy. Third post on that book this year? :^D I know you love it.

Paul Watkins never really got the attention he deserved. Last year at a party someone recommended a writer saying, "I bet you've never heard of him. Paul Watkins." I said, "Oh yes, Paul Watkins. He wrote THE FORGER. Wanted to be the new Hemingway." HA! I bet if you were at that party you would've stumped me with an unknown writer or book, Yvette.

I read a few of Cockey's Hitchcock the undertaker books. Didn't do much for me. This was years and years before SIX FEET UNDER made the undertaking business so interesting and often funny. I guess Cockey deserves some mention for getting there first.

The Neal Carey series is excellent. Thanks for talking about him and clueing everyone in to a set of books well wroth reading. I wanted to do A COOL BREEZE ON THE UNDERGROUND for FFB, but someone beat me to it and I won't do repeat reviews for that feature. I may write about the whole series some day at my blog. Really good stuff. Winslow is originally from Connecticut (my home state) and that's really the first reason I started reading his books. I'm glad I did.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-56285505590931173062011-08-10T09:18:19.637-04:002011-08-10T09:18:19.637-04:00Ryan: Then my work here is done. :)
