In 'Rotten' the idea of Hamlet hiding out at the boarding house is so preposterously funny. NO ONE else could have thought of this, but Jasper.

I also loved (though uneasily) the whole Nazi analogy. All things Danish being forbidden, INCLUDING Danish pastry.
I mean, I laughed through that whole book. But realized that there was, really, a very serious undercurrent going on.

I think to love these books you have to have a smattering of classic lit in your background (that's me, a 'smattering') and an appreciation for Brit humor AND a love of the English language.

I never saw Monty Python and YET, I love these books.

Oh, well, of course you have to appreciate looniness for looniness' sake AND wit and dry humor.

AND also the sounds that dodos make.

As for SHADES OF GREY, I loved it as well. Though not from the beginning. This took me a while to get into. But once I did, I was in for keeps. I listed the book as one my Ten Best for last year and I meant it. :)Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-58632418970366174662011-02-21T11:52:10.027-05:002011-02-21T11:52:10.027-05:00Jasper Fforde is seriously deranged. I liked the first two books but sort of lost interest in them after they started being a collection of jokes and incidents and not really well told stories. But I managed to get through in its entirety SHADES OF GREY - an alternative universe/sci-fi/mystery (his books defy categorization) that is like nothing I've ever read. He says it was inspired by a computer mishap when he lost huge chunks of files. It was kind of hypnotic and I kept trying to figure out all his computer references and other allusions. You have to be a fan of Monty Python style Brit humor to really appreciate his books.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-4425009147981080552011-02-20T17:12:44.825-05:002011-02-20T17:12:44.825-05:00Oh absolutely, Rachel. I love these books, too. Remember in SOMETHING ROTTEN when Hamlet is on the run and has to hide out at the boarding house. SO funny.Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-45732806995206751172011-02-20T16:51:18.100-05:002011-02-20T16:51:18.100-05:00Oh I love these books...such good fun (especially ...Oh I love these books...such good fun (especially if you are a reader/can get all the off-hand literary references he makes throughout!)
Fab :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-88429013888008345012011-02-20T15:38:34.830-05:002011-02-20T15:38:34.830-05:00Yvonne: If you want to know what happens next you ...Yvonne: If you want to know what happens next you have to read the book. Ha! Actually, Thursday is in a kind of alternate universe. But that's the only hint I'll give.
