I did read my share years ago, like chocolates, just gulping them down and coming back for more.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-36690369213420212672015-09-22T18:59:57.878-04:002015-09-22T18:59:57.878-04:00I read about their marriage, Kathy. They knew each other well enough to respect their quirks and individuality in this way.

Parker was very progressive in many ways and it showed in his writing. Wasn't he the first to write about a white protagonist who had a black best friend? I think so.Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-16311256339004103162015-09-20T05:57:31.253-04:002015-09-20T05:57:31.253-04:00I haven't read any Spenser books in years, but...I haven't read any Spenser books in years, but the NY Times crossword puzzle mentioned this character in the last few days and I was reminded of the books. Don't think I read this one, but I used to laugh so much at the dialogue. And I liked Pearl.

Now, I don't recall disliking Susan. In fact, I think I thought that since I live in New York, I know many people like her. But now you've gotten me curious, so maybe I'll get this one and read it and see what all the fuss is about.

I'm wondering if she's rather self-centered and feels entitled. That's all I can remember.

I did enjoy the books, and with a few, I was glad to see that Robert Parker was so progressive about gay people.

Also, Robert and Joan Parker were married for decades. The secret is that they lived on different floors of their house and saw each other at appointed times. Oh, how many relationships would last with that arrangement. Don't remember it at all. So maybe it's one I missed? Anything's possible. Sounds good though. So obviously it's some sort of 'men are from mars' thing. Ha. It's interesting too that in the books, Susan seems to have no female friends. That's telling. She' is apparently based on Parker's wife which is also telling. Listen, I like that Spenser is devoted to Susan, I like that he's capable of that kind of love. But that still doesn't mean I have to like the woman. I don't remember the dog, so I may not have gotten this far. I didn't care one way or the other about Susan; I wonder why you seem to dislike her so.Rick Robinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07978136287154214297noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-65697931400742614382015-09-11T12:16:19.829-04:002015-09-11T12:16:19.829-04:00Oh, Pearl has nothing much to do except chew on te...Oh, Pearl has nothing much to do except chew on tennis balls and run from gun fire. She's a dog dog in this, not a leading character. So no excuses, Sergio. :) This is a terrific book, as is EARLY AUTUMN. I'd also check out LOOKING FOR RACHEL WALLACE, SMALL VICES, PAPER DOLL, ROUGH WEATHER and...that's all I remember off the top of my head. :)Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-9165053608681223922015-09-11T05:43:07.873-04:002015-09-11T05:43:07.873-04:00Not read this one yet Yvette - thanks (though as I...Not read this one yet Yvette - thanks (though as I am more of a cat person, I may love this a teensy weensy bit less than you ...)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
