But really, it was just a bit of romantic fluff.

Debby Reynolds looked very young for a very long time. I was never a VERY big fan, but she was okay.

My parents always loved her in THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN. Me, less so.

I did visit your blog earlier, by the way. I wouldn't want to be accused of ignoring you. :)Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-45935405835648127092011-09-20T17:46:49.737-04:002011-09-20T17:46:49.737-04:00Yvette, your SUSAN SLEPT HERE blog post was a fun ...Yvette, your SUSAN SLEPT HERE blog post was a fun read, as always! I can see how SUSAN... might have raised eyebrows in that era, especially in the 1950s. They probably could have pulled it off better if Dick Powell (don't get me wrong, he's one of my faves) actually looked like the thirty-something bon vivant his character was supposed to be. Great cast, though, including Alvy Moore of GREEN ACRES/PETTICOAT JUNCTION and Les Tremayne of NORTH BY NORTHWEST, among other film and TV roles! I had to laugh at the screen-grab at the end with Powell and Debbie Reynolds, because it made me think of THE GAZEBO, which I'd prattled on about in a recent TotED blog post! :-) Speaking of blog posts, why not come around for a virtual visit if you have the time? :-)

http://doriantb.blogspot.com/2011/09/team-bartiluccis-cmba-guilty-pleasures.htmlDorianTBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01357778472575080022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-11114237546654563692011-09-20T16:35:16.913-04:002011-09-20T16:35:16.913-04:00Todd: We are in agreement but as I said, you have ...Todd: We are in agreement but as I said, you have to suspsend disbelief in these sorts of films.

They're harmless enough. My mom and I loved it way back when and even later when we watched it on television.

You'd probably not get away with this sort of thing today. And I'm not so sure it's a good thing.

We should be open to all sorts of perambulations when it comes to love. Not saying that SUSAN SLEPT HERE was art in any way, or had anything important to say about anything - but it does no harm to have these fluffy scenarios mixed in with all the grim crap we get today.Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-64805736540096892802011-09-20T16:21:36.569-04:002011-09-20T16:21:36.569-04:00Francis all of two years older than Reynolds...and...Francis all of two years older than Reynolds...and Powell 51 at time of release (Francis 25).Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01815516018079824802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-56559297635079724022011-09-20T16:17:40.610-04:002011-09-20T16:17:40.610-04:00A good role for James Garner, except he'd be a...A good role for James Garner, except he'd be a bit too young at the time.

Hell, Anne Francis is too damned young for Powell, too...but in Hollywood terms, then as now, I'm sure it all seemed quite familiar...Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01815516018079824802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-74133879218588201562011-09-20T14:58:55.318-04:002011-09-20T14:58:55.318-04:00Prashant: I love them too. I'm afraid I haven't seen SUSAN SLEPT HERE though not long ago I saw THE MATING GAME, a romantic comedy starring the vivacious Debbie Reynolds and Tony Randall — good for a lazy Sunday afternoon.Prashant C. Debbie Reynolds does look like a child in comparison with Dick Powell who certainly does look to be old enough to be her father!!

We love the name Maude Snodgrass and can well see that even that could be deemed to be unacceptable in these politically correct times!!Jane and Lance Hattatthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16831890261259302647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-10282999215798894002011-09-20T10:12:08.578-04:002011-09-20T10:12:08.578-04:00Possibly they could have cast an actor who ACTUALL...Possibly they could have cast an actor who ACTUALLY was 35 at the time. :)

Can't think who either. Dick Powell was jaunty enough.

You have to suspend disbelief big time in these sorts of films. I liked this one primarily because of the rest of the cast.

By the way, I always felt that Debby Reynolds was also a bit too young for Gene Kelly in SINGING IN THE RAIN. But I know I'm in the minority.Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-75174543596277078262011-09-20T10:05:15.854-04:002011-09-20T10:05:15.854-04:00I think many in today's audience would have a ...I think many in today's audience would have a hard time with "Susan Slept Here" because of the age difference of the leads. You have to really throw yourself into the cartoon world of Frank Tashlin. Dick Powell was certainly able to do just that, but it was pretty sad that they kept mentioning his character's age of 35 when he was obviously older. Although I can't think of who I would cast in his stead. Powell seemed to "get" what was required of him.Caftan Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05936895555808823221noreply@blogger.com
