In high school I was a major fan of Grey's books. I'm going to check into that.
Thanks for the tip, John.

Memory-wise: I'm laughing. My old lady memory occasionally works - surprise, surprise!Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-15052868331588313192011-02-01T17:31:48.122-05:002011-02-01T17:31:48.122-05:00Yes, Gruber wrote quite a few westersn. I checked imdb and yes he wrote THE BIG LAND w/ Alan Ladd - the novel, but not the screenplay. Treat yourself to something for having a sharper memory than I. :^D

AND... through the miracle of Google I learned he wrote the definitive biography on Zane Grey.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-59486085119129967332011-02-01T08:42:55.644-05:002011-02-01T08:42:55.644-05:00John: I've seen notes or heard about the film ...John: I've seen notes or heard about the film over the years but Zacary Scott is one scary dude, so I hesitated. But I am definitely going to see it now. Sidney Greenstreet! Love him. I'm assuming he plays Mr. Peters.

Frank Gruber. Did he, by any chance, write some westerns? I'm thinking...The Big Land, something like that. An Alan Ladd picture.
The tuning fork in my brain is vibrating.

Ambler, in appearance looks very much like Ian Fleming. They are both of a suave type, aren't they? :)Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3185294584889963228.post-651057093119082212011-02-01T03:17:53.621-05:002011-02-01T03:17:53.621-05:00The movie version was renamed MASK OF DIMITRIOS. After double checking some info at imdb I just learned that the screenplay for this was done by American mystery writer Frank Gruber! A real lifetime writer whose work filled many pages of pulp magazines and covered all the genres. He wrote some fun books, too. I may have to add one of his to the Challenge to bring him out of Limbo of the Forgotten.

As for Ambler: I think almost all of his books were made into movies including his one foray into the comic caper: Light of Day which became the sparklingly witty & colorful heist flick Topkapi. That's one of my all time favorite caper movies.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.com
